Devan "DJ" Cherry Obituary

With heavy hearts and tearful laughter, we bid farewell to the one and only Devan James "DJ" Cherry, who departed from this world after a brief but valiant 19-day battle with an illness that affected his heart, but not his zest for life. DJ, born on May 21, 1989, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, was a force of nature from the moment he graced this Earth until his last breath on April 2, 2024.

DJ wasn't just a person; he was an experience, a whirlwind of mischief and mayhem that left everyone in stitches or shaking their heads in disbelief. A true prankster extraordinaire, DJ could turn any mundane moment into a sidesplitting comedy routine, complete with off-color jokes that would make a sailor blush and a puritan faint. But oh, how we loved him for it!

Despite his propensity for mischief, DJ had a heart of gold, especially when serving the needs of patients as a paramedic. He was the life of the party, the one who could light up a room with his infectious laughter and irrepressible spirit. And when it came to family, DJ was a true champion. He made every holiday special for his nieces and nephew, showering them with love, laughter, and more than a few questionable gifts that undoubtedly left their parents shaking their heads.

A self-proclaimed momma's boy, DJ never hesitated to show his love and appreciation for his dear mother, Liz. He was her pride and joy, her partner in crime, and she remained his rock through thick and thin. And though his time with us was far too short, DJ left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

DJ was preceded in death by his loving mother, Liz Cherry; his granny, Carolyn Tate; and paternal grandparents, William and Pearl Cherry.

Survivors include his father, Ron Cherry; sisters, Holly Hogan (Brandon) and Jessica Randol (Nathan); and nieces and nephews, Harper, Henry, Abby, Jaxten, Lylah; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and best friends, who were like surrogate family members.

A celebration of life will be held 3-7 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway – Jeffersonville. Friends and family are encouraged to harness the spirit of DJ and dress casually, and come as you are for the sharing of stories at the conclusion of visiting hours, 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association.
