Anthony "Tony" J. Wiesen Obituary

Anthony "Tony" J. Wiesen, age 75, of Jeffersonville, passed away on August 11, 2024.  Tony was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend whose life was defined by his love for his family, his faith, and his passion for sports, especially Providence football.

Tony is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Bobbye D. Wiesen, and his cherished son, Daniel M. Wiesen. He was preceded in death by both his son, R. Nicholas "Nick" Wiesen, whom he always kept close in his heart, and by his sister, Anne Francisco, whose husband Mike survives. Tony is also survived by his sisters, Sandra (Steve) Ferney, Mary Bohen, Liz (David) Briggs, and his brother, Eric (Fran) Wiesen. He was a beloved uncle to numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly.

After a fulfilling career, Tony retired from the Kentucky Department for Human Resources, where he served as a Juvenile Counselor. His career also included a brief tenure at the Census Bureau before working for several years at Bridgepointe Elementary School.

Tony's love for sports and dedication to coaching left a lasting impact on many young people. He served as the strength and conditioning coach for the Our Lady of Providence High School football team, first under the legendary head coach Gene Sartini, and in recent years, with head coach Daniel McDonald. Tony's coaching career also included coaching Charlestown Little League Baseball and Little Pirate Football in the 1990s. An "old school" coach, Tony instilled in his players the values of preparation, hard work, and a "Burning Desire" to succeed. His love for Notre Dame football and Providence High School was only surpassed by his devotion to his family and his faith in Jesus Christ.

Even while battling illness, Tony remained active in supporting the Providence football team and coaches, driven by his deep commitment to the sport and the people he loved. Tony was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Jeffersonville. He contributed to the church community by assisting with providing communion to the residents of Bridgepointe Gardens.

Tony was a lifelong learner, always seeking to expand his knowledge on various subjects. He was well-read, researched topics thoroughly, and had a unique talent for expressing his thoughts in writing. His wisdom, passion, and articulate nature will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The Wiesen family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Norton Clark Hospital ICU, whose personalized care provided comfort during Tony’s final days. They are also forever grateful to the Providence football family for their unwavering support.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Tony's memory can be made to St. Vincent De Paul c/o Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Jeffersonville, IN, or to the Our Lady of Providence High School Student Financial Assistance Program or Athletic Fund Program.
