Arthur Lee Gholson Sr.

Arthur Lee Gholson Sr. was born January 21, 1938 in Hopewell, VA, one of 11 children born to the late Claiborne Sr. and Luvenia Gholson. 

He was a graduate of Carter G. Woodson High School and then joined the Army, serving 6 years and was honorably discharged in December of 1964.  He was All-Sports in Basketball, Football and Baseball for the 21st Infantry Grimlets/1st Cav Division Cavalier Cagers and the 1960 25th Division All Stars. 

Arthur married Geneva Freeman in 1963 and to this union seven children were born: Valerie Gholson Day, Arthur Lee Gholson Jr., Veronica Cook (Theo), Crystal Gholson, Gregory Gholson, Carol Smith, Jessica Gholson, and Genanatte Young, from a previous relationship.

He was employed by Celanese/NIBCO until his retirement.  He was very active with attending sports activities of U of L Men and Women’s teams, his children and grandchildren’s sports, academic, creative and family activities.  He enjoyed spending time at Churchill Downs for years. 

Arthur Lee Gholson Sr. of Louisville, KY departed this life on July 2, 2020 on Thursday afternoon with his children by his side at U of L Hospital. 

He leaves to cherish his memories 8 devoted children; brothers, Claiborne Gholson Jr. “Sonny Boy”, James J. Gholson “Butch”, Oneal Gholson “Boo Boo”, and Ronnie L. Gholson Sr.; a sister, Jean Gholson; sixteen grandchildren,  eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. 

The family will be honoring Arthur L Gholson, Sr. in a private family celebration of life.
