Billie D. Shireman

Billie Dean Shireman, 84, passed away peacefully at his residence on July 6, 2026, with the love of his family surrounding him. Born on October 30, 1941, Billie lived a life defined by honor, service, dedication, and friendship, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A proud United States Army Sergeant, Billie courageously served his country during the Vietnam War. He participated in the historic Tet Offensive, one of the most significant campaigns of the war, and was awarded the Bronze Star in recognition of his bravery, leadership, and distinguished service. He carried great pride in his military service throughout his life, and his commitment to duty remained an enduring part of who he was.

Following his military service, Billie devoted his career to education and mentoring young people. For more than 20 years, he taught and coached at Jeffersonville High School, where he became especially well known as the beloved coach of the girls' golf team. Whether in the classroom or on the golf course, Coach Shireman inspired generations of students through his patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in their potential. His influence extended far beyond wins and losses, shaping lives through the lessons of discipline, integrity, and perseverance.

Outside of work, Billie embraced life with enthusiasm. He was a devoted fan of Indiana University athletics, especially Hoosier basketball, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer on his favorite teams. He also cherished the simple pleasures of spending time with friends at the 19th Green, where laughter, card games, and lifelong friendships created countless treasured memories.

Above all else, Billie was a devoted husband, family man, and loyal friend. He shared 54 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Karen, whose love and partnership were the foundation of his life.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Karen Shireman; his sister, Nyla "Susie" Moore (Marvin); his sister-in-law, Pat Shireman; and many extended family members, friends, former students, and athletes who will forever remember his kindness, wisdom, and steady presence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Burrell and Mary Ann Shireman; and his brothers, Larry Shireman, Dale Shireman, and Darryl Shireman.

In keeping with Billie's wishes, cremation has been chosen, and no services are currently planned.

Billie will be remembered as a decorated veteran, a respected educator and coach, a faithful husband, and a man whose quiet strength, generous heart, and enduring character touched countless lives. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will continue in the many lives he influenced, the family he cherished, and the friends who were fortunate enough to know him.
