Billy Joe "BJ" Durrett, an extraordinary man of many talents and a beloved family member, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the age of 72. BJ was born on June 21, 1952, to the late Earl and Hazel Durrett in Greensburg, Kentucky.
BJ led a remarkable life, serving his country with honor and distinction as a Navy linguist, specializing in the Mandarin language. His dedication to service continued in his professional life, where he worked as a civil engineer before retiring. BJ's contributions to both his country and his field were significant and left a lasting impact.
BJ was a devoted and loving husband to Jean Laraine Durrett for 40 wonderful years. He is survived by his cherished daughter, Kimberly Bowles (Greg); his grandchildren, Amber Anderson (John), Mandy Grider (Sid), Anna Silva (Joshua), Samuel Bowles (Angel), and Zachary Bowles; and twelve great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
He is also survived by his siblings: Earl Durrett Jr (Evelyn) of New Hampshire, Shirley Durrett of Kentucky, and Brenda Larson of Maine. BJ's family and friends will forever remember him for his kindness, generosity, and the deep love he had for those around him.
BJ will be laid to rest with military honors at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, Kentucky at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, July 8, 2024. His legacy of service, love, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
