Darrell W. Bartels
On December 21, 2020, Darrell joined his parents, Donald and Marian, and brother, Rory in Heaven. Born in a Virginia Naval hospital on October 4, 1952, he grew up in a Navy family that spent time in Virginia, California, Washington State and Louisiana.
After graduating from Ponchatoula High School, Darrell followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Navy during the Vietnam War, traveled the world keeping the electrical systems on the ships running in tiptop condition and never getting electrocuted. He also took part in Operation Desert Storm, the Kuwait War, and “guarding cows” in Wisconsin training soldiers with the Army Reserve. His final assignment with the Navy Reserves was the “Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 205.” When his active duty ended, he settled in Chesapeake, Virginia and joined the Chesapeake Police Department, retiring in 1999.
The Boy Scouts of America was his life from childhood on earning multiple awards, Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver and many others. Scouters agree he was a “Hoot.”
Darrell will be missed by his wife of almost 33 years, Rhona Joy Alldaffer Bartels; adult children, Daniel Wayne and Tobias Rose; his fur kinds, Baby Dart (doggie) and Cyclops (kitty); his brothers, Robert (Kim) and Dale (Susan); and multiple nieces.
