He is preceded in death by his parents, Ardell and Marie Shelton: his brother Carl and sister Elizabeth; and his infant son, Travis Jeremy.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cindy, and their three children Trent Denny (Wendy), Michelle Mayfield (David), and Dee Shelton Jr. He has 11 grandchildren, Tyler, Dee III, Isabella, Trenton, Kane, Victoria, Katherine, Luke, Isaac, Nicholas and Charlotte. Dee started his career with GE and then was drafted in 1971 and served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Courtney. He returned to work for GE and became the Chief Union Steward for building 4 in Louisville, Kentucky where he later retired in 2003.
Dee was a compassionate man and would give the shirt off his back to help others. It was not uncommon for him to display random acts of kindness to total strangers. Always quick with a smile and a helping hand.
He was a gifted athlete and avid sports fan. Dee was inducted into the Slow Pitch Softball Hall of Fame and loved the Kentucky Wildcats Basketball team. Dee also coached DJ’s Little League Team in Clarksville for several years and won the League Championship with the youngest team that year. Golf was his passion in his later years and many of his friends and family members experienced his great skill. Many will remember the 20 plus years he hosted the Shelton Classic Golf Tournament at Bright Leaf Golf Course. When he wasn’t playing golf, you could find him coaching baseball for his grandson’s team winning 3 more Little League Championships.
He loved outdoor activities with his sons and grandchildren and they loved hanging out with their Poppa. From pitching horseshoes to gardening or swimming in the pool. They knew a great time was always to be had at Poppa and Nana’s house.
