Dorothy "Dottie" Rae Lentz Marshall

September 19, 1927 ~ May 8, 2021 (age 93)


Dorothy “Dottie” Rae Lentz Marshall, 93, of Jeffersonville, Indiana passed away Saturday, May
8th, 2021. She was born September 19, 1927 in her paternal grandparents house off Utica Pike
on the banks of the Ohio River, where the Port of Indiana is now located. At age 5 or 6, Dorothy
and her parents moved to Watson, Indiana to live with her maternal grandparents. Dorothy
met the love of her life Robert (Bob) Marshall in high school they married soon after his return
from Italy following the war and remained married until his death in 2009. Dorothy graduated
from Jeffersonville High School in 1945 and from Transylvania College in 1949 with a Bachelor’s
Degree in English and a minor in Sociology. She worked for five years as a social worker in child
welfare and even kept in touch with some of her adoptive mothers for most of her life. Her only
child, Kathryn, was born in 1955.

Following early retirement, Dorothy became a life-long volunteer, pursuing her passions.
Throughout a very fulfilling life, she volunteered at the Howard Steamboat Museum in
Jeffersonville, Indiana for over 50 years, giving tours up until three months ago. She also
volunteered with United Way, the Cerebral Palsy Association, and the Humane Association. She
was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Ladies Union Club and was a 4-H leader.
While her daughter was in school, Dorothy was always the room-mother who did it all as well
as being secretary of the PTA for a few years. Dorothy wrote a lesson on Indiana history that
she taught in local 3 rd grade classes for several years in the late 1960’s. She was a prolific letter
writer; maintaining correspondences with her friends and in later years, their children and
grandchildren. Dorothy was also a prolific reader. At one point she counted that she had 1,000+

Dorothy lived most of her adult life in her family home in Jeffersonville close to her daughter
and granddaughter. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Dorothy Dix Lentz and
Raymond Lentz and her husband Robert (Bob) Marshall. She is survived by her daughter,
Kathryn Marshall Davis (Levois) and granddaughter, Patrie Lauren Davis (Tulsa).
A Remembrance Reception for Dorothy will be held Sunday, September 19, 2021 from 1pm to
5pm at the Carriage House at the Howard Steamboat Museum. Also, to honor Dorothy’s 50+
years as a tour guide at the Howard Steamboat Museum, they are opening the Museum and
will have it staffed during the reception so that any of you may tour free of charge. All friends
are encouraged to attend.
