Douglas Hartz Obituary

Douglas Hartz, 91, of Jeffersonville passed away peacefully on February 20, 2024.

He was born on February 28, 1932 in Mitchell, NE to Raymond and Dorothy (Douglas) Hartz. He spent a happy youth on the farm with his sisters and a myriad of animals. After graduating from high school in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict and served his time as a cook on 3 aircraft carriers, with attachments to at least 2 Marine squadrons.  After service, he took that experience and added one year of Culinary Arts training in New York City and worked in the restaurant industry, that eventually brought him to Jeffersonville, IN where he met the love of his life.

Doug and Norma Jean Austin Hartz were married in 1959, had 3 children and he went on to open and operate Hartz cafeteria from 1968 until 1978.  Starting in ’78 he took a position in restaurant operations management for the Galt House and worked there until retirement. During retirement in the late 1990s he enjoyed his hobbies of gardening and Bluegrass music.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Norma, son Jerome and 2 sisters. He is survived by his son Christopher, daughter Valarie and grandchildren Sean and Scarlett Jansing.
