George Taggart Obituary

George Taggart, 82, of Jeffersonville, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, service, and quiet excellence that touched countless lives.

Born in Ballyclare, Northern Ireland, George was the beloved son of the late George & Elizabeth (Walker) Taggart. From his earliest days, he carried with him a deep love for his homeland—a love that remained steadfast even as life carried him across oceans to build a new chapter in the United States.

George proudly served in the British Military as part of Special Operations with the Royal Marines. His service took him to far corners of the world he had once only imagined, shaping his perspective and deepening his appreciation for people and cultures everywhere. George was a recipient of the Campaign Service Medal after he and several other troopers went MIA, taken by Egyptian/Yemeni tribal men in Africa. Under the cover of night, they would travel behind enemy lines and ground cover in order to get to the border—for rescue and Freedom!  Though fate eventually brought him to Indiana, where he made his home and raised his family, his heart always held space for those he loved overseas.

Professionally, George devoted many years as a phlebotomist with the Red Cross, where he earned a reputation that was nothing short of legendary. Known as the one who would “get it right the first time, every time,” George’s skill, precision, and calm reassurance made him the go-to expert. His peers across the state recognized what those closest to him already knew—he was simply the best…so he was awarded for being the Best Phlebotomist in the Region!

Even in retirement, George’s desire to care for others never waned. As a “Sitter” at Baptist Floyd Hospital, he provided comfort and watchful presence to patients in need, offering not only safety but companionship. He had a natural gift for connecting with people, and his gentle spirit made friendships bloom wherever he went.  To many, George was fondly known as the “Butterscotch Man,” always carrying candies in his pockets to share—a small but meaningful gesture that reflected his generous and thoughtful nature.

Above all, George cherished his family. He found immense joy in traveling together, especially on cruises where laughter, discovery, and togetherness filled each day. Whether exploring new destinations or revisiting familiar ones, those shared experiences became treasured memories. Trips to England and Ireland were particularly special, as George reunited with extended family that proudly guided new loved ones through the places that shaped him. Likewise, when family visited the United States, George delighted in showing them the beauty and diversity of his adopted home.

An avid reader, George was rarely without a book, always eager to learn, reflect, and let his imagination wander. His faith was equally central to his life, and he was a devoted, lifelong member of Christ Gospel Church.

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Agnes Eileen Taggart.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving daughter, Kathryn Leamer (David); his devoted son, Michael Taggart (Harold Phipps); his sister, Elizabeth Taggart; his brother, James Taggart; his cherished grandchildren, Brittany Armstrong (Seth) and Shane Leamer (Katlin); and his adored great-grandchildren, Avery, Scottie, and Holden Armstrong, who were truly the apples of his eye.

George Taggart will be remembered for his steady hands, his generous heart, and the sweetness he brought into the lives of others—often in the form of a simple butterscotch candy, always offered with a smile.
