Hayward "Bailey" Blanton, age 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 23, 2025. Born in Harlan County, Kentucky, Bailey was the beloved son of the late Jess and Roberta Blanton.
Bailey was one of nine siblings. At the age of 8, after the death of his father, he and seven of his siblings were raised in the Masonic Home Orphanage. He lived there until he attended college.
Bailey received a Track & field scholarship as a Pole Vaulter and was part of the tumbling team for Lindsey Wilson College. He graduated from Western, KY with a B.S. Education. Bailey dedicated his life to education, shaping young minds as a school teacher and a track & field coach in Louisville. He proudly served Jefferson County Public Schools for 33 years before retiring, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and impact in the classroom.
Upon retiring from teaching-Bailey spent his time with family. He loved the outdoors & nature. At the age of 71 he led a group of boy scouts on a hike up to Knobby Rock, Harlan County, KY which was one of his favorite places to hike. He spent many adventures hiking, hunting & riding ATV’s with his brothers on the family property in Harlan, KY. His grandchildren loved to hear his elk call.
Bailey shepherded the flock at Meigs Avenue Church of Christ and later at Hamburg Pike Church of Christ in Jeffersonville, Indiana for 48 years as a Deacon, Elder, and song leader. His favorite song to lead was “I’ll Fly Away”. Bailey was very fond of the story of David & Goliath. He could relate to the motto of overcoming odds. Bailey participated in many Mission trips to spread God’s word including Panama & Central America.
He was also known for his unwavering support for the University of Kentucky Wildcats.
Bailey was passionate about his grandchildren & great-grandchildren, he nurtured, coached and taught them. He and Betty loved a FULL house.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Betty Blanton; his sons, Joey Blanton (Lori), Greg Blanton (Jennifer), and Lance Blanton (Lynn); and his grandchildren, Joshua (Caitlin), Micah (Kirstyn), Joel, Haydn, Bailey, Kylie, Tiara (Kahdrell), Isaiah, Lynnsey, Logan, and Lacy. Bailey also leaves behind a cherished legacy in his great-grandchildren: Addyson, Maddox, Penelope, Roman, Kyngston, Harmony, and Amara.
Visitation will be held from 12 to 4 p.m. followed by a service on Friday, May 30, 2025, at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, with a celebration of his life to follow at a later date. In accordance with Bailey’s wishes, cremation will take place following the service.
