Ivan Dale (Sr) Coats

Ivan "Dale" Coats, Sr., 62, of Salem, Indiana, passed away peacefully 8:16 p.m. on Monday, September 30, 2024. Born as the cherished only child of Lewie and Thelma Coats, Dale grew up in Salem, where he developed a deep connection to the land and farming. He spent many seasons planting, nurturing, cutting, spiking, and hanging his prized tobacco crop—an endeavor that embodied his hard work and dedication to the farming way of life.

As a young man, Dale was known for enjoying his long-cut Grizzly and a cold Coke, simple pleasures that captured his laid-back spirit. He had a special affinity for his Massey Ferguson tractor, which he treated as an extension of himself, and his trusty Stihl chainsaw, which was always by his side. Dale's love for the land was evident in every furrow he plowed, every crop he nurtured, and every moment he spent beneath the Indiana sun. He enjoyed time spent tending to his cherished cattle and hogs, a testament to his love for animals and the way of life in small town America.

He is survived by his children, Jessica “Punk” Gavin (Chris), Ivan “Brother” Coats, Jr., and Johnathan “Jo” Coats; and his beloved grandchildren, Tonya, Caleb, Kaelyn, Perry, and Penny.

Dale's family has honored his wish for cremation. He will be remembered fondly for his rugged spirit, dedication to farming, and the love he had for his work and community. His legacy lives on in the fields he nurtured and the countless memories he created for those who knew and loved him. A graveside service and burial of his ashes will occur at a later date.
