James Lee "Jim" Ashton, Sr.

James Lee “Jim” Ashton, Sr., age 93, of Jeffersonville, passed away on Friday, October 17, 2025, surrounded by those who loved him most. Born to the late Martha Louetta (Lumpkins) and Curtis Franklin Ashton, Sr., Jim lived a long, full life marked by devotion—to his family, his country, his community, and his faith.

A proud U.S. Army Veteran, Jim served his nation with honor before returning home to dedicate over 30 years as a firefighter. His career was not just a job—it was a calling. He embodied courage, loyalty, and compassion, rushing toward danger so others could find safety. His steady hands and calm presence earned the respect of all who served beside him and the gratitude of the community he protected.  Jim’s dedication extended well beyond his service uniform. He was a proud member of Masonic Lodge #340 and the Eastern Star #327, where he built lasting friendships grounded in integrity and brotherhood. A man of faith, he found strength and fellowship at Elevate Life Church, where he worshiped with gratitude and humility.

Outside of his service, Jim found joy in life’s simpler blessings—watching IU Basketball (often with a bit of spirited commentary), traveling with his family to the Gulf Coast for sun-soaked beach days, and camping under starlit skies. Jim adored his grandbabies and each child he encountered.  He was quick to offer a smile, a hug, a word of advice, and lead by example with great character.  He loved the feel of fresh country air and the sound of an engine rumbling to life—especially that of a classic Farmall tractor. Collecting and restoring them wasn’t just a pastime; it was a passion, a reflection of his appreciation for craftsmanship, hard work, and history.

Above all, Jim was a family man. His love for his wife, Vivian (Ratcliff) Ashton, was steadfast and true, built on years of laughter, shared adventures, and deep devotion. He was a proud father to Jim Ashton, Jr. (Diana Howlett) and Amanda Rehkamp (Jason), and was a joyful grandfather to Scott Ashton, Kevin Ashton, Emily Bealer, Evan Bealer, and Madison Rehkamp. He also leaves behind his sister, Martha Shirley, who shared in many of his life’s memories.  Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Madonna Baldwin, and a brother, Curtis “Bub” Ashton, Jr.

Jim’s life was one of service, strength, and heart—a legacy that will live on in those who knew him.

Visitation will be 4–8 PM on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at Scott Funeral Home (2515 Veterans Parkway), with Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star Services. Funeral will be held 11 AM on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at Scott Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Wilma M. Bone of Elevate Life Church.  Burial will follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery, where military honors will be rendered in his memory.

Jim Ashton lived as he served—with honor, kindness, and quiet strength. His presence will be deeply missed, but his example will remain a guiding light for generations to come.
