Gene Thompson, Sr., age 79, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at Wedgewood in Clarksville, leaving behind a lifetime of memories built with strong hands, a generous heart, and a well-earned sense of pride. Born to the late Roy and Lorraine (Nelson) Thompson, Gene spent many years as a skilled carpenter in the construction industry. He believed in honest work and doing things the right way—the first time. His tools were always clean, organized, and exactly where they belonged, a reflection of the care and precision he brought to everything he did.
Gene found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved working on old cars, tinkering in the garage, and sharing an ice-cold beer with his buddies from “The Liars Club.” Their famous Dump Runs were legendary, as Gene could see potential where others saw scrap, always believing something old could be made new again. An avid outdoorsman, Gene often reminisced about the good ole days, especially the times spent fishing with his son, hoping that today would be the day they’d finally catch the big one. Those moments—quiet, meaningful, and filled with laughter—were treasures he held close. Above all else, Gene was a devoted family man. He worked hard to ensure his family was always safe and provided for. He loved laughing with his children and grandbabies and wanted nothing more than for them to be happy, healthy, and loved. His steady presence, warm smile, and gentle guidance will be deeply missed.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, George Thompson; and his sisters, Nanie Myers and Mary Ritchie.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Wanda Carol Thompson; his son, James Thompson, Jr. (Paula); daughters, Stephanie Eddington (Barry) and Kim Thompson; grandchildren, Kaile and Jessica; great-grandchildren, Theodore and Thomas; and a special nephew, Gary Ritchie.
Gene will be cremated according to his wishes. Memorial services will be held at a later date at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville.
Gene’s legacy lives on in the stories told, the lessons learned, and the love he so freely gave. He will be remembered always.
