James E. Dyson Obituary

James E. Dyson was called home on June 2, 2024 at the age of 78. He was born on December 25,1945 in Jeffersonville, Indiana to Charles and Minnie Dyson.

James served on the Jeffersonville Fire Department from the age of 21 to 61. He has one of the longest standing careers in the departments history. As the second African American to be hired, James retired as a battalion Chief. Several years later, he returned to serve on the Merit board up until his death. James had a second career as a barber located in the quadrangle on 10th street. His barbershop was lost in one of the largest fires in Jeffersonville history in the 1990’s. Ironically James was working at the shop when it went a blaze. James headed straight to the firehouse.

James had several hobbies including being an avid bowler, fishing, and shooting pool. He also enjoyed playing cards with his fellow retired firefighters.

James E. Dyson was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Minnie Dyson of Jeffersonville, Indiana. He is survived by his wife, Lorilyn Dyson; his two sons, Sean Dyson along with his wife Carrie Dyson and Roy McWilliams; his daughter, Danielle McWilliams; his sister, Etta Shelby along with several grand-children, great-grand-children, nieces and nephews.

James was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway on Wednesday, June 12 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm with his funeral service at 6:00.
