James Volney Rife, 90 peacefully passed away on October 8, 2023. He was born in Cairo, Illinois to Dr. Berry V. and Charlotte (Ledden) Rife. Besides his parents Jim was preceded in death by Barbara L. (Hamm) Rife, his wife of 69 years, their son Mark D. Rife and his brother Berry L. Rife.

Jim graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Carthage College. After graduation he enlisted and served in the peacetime Army which included a couple years in Germany. After completing his military commitment, Jim began a career in Agriculture Chemical sales. This career led to family moves to New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana, and finally South Carolina. With each move Jim and Barb developed great relationships and lifelong friends.

Jim enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting, fishing, boating, and golfing. While in South Carolina Jim became a Clemson Tiger football fan. Jim was always planning and looking forward to their next worldwide travel adventure.

Jim is survived by his son Scott (Veronica), two granddaughters Sarah Stuart (Braxton), Kathryn Rife and great grandchildren Lillian and Nolan Stuart, daughter-in-law Pam Rife (Mark) and brother Dr. Charles (Barbara Rose) Rife.

Jim’s arrangements have been entrusted to Scott Funeral Home, Jeffersonville, IN with his Celebration of Life service to be held at a later date.
