Jessie Hume Obituary

Jessie Lee Dobson Hume, 88, passed away peacefully in the early morning of January 22, 2022 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. She was born on July 31, 1933 in Jeffersonville to the late Robert Haulter and Lillis Haulter (Adams).

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by brothers, Eugene Haulter, Howard Haulter, Richard Haulter, and Robert Haulter; sisters, Eleanor Haulter Allen, Dolores Haulter, and Darlene Haulter Hall. Jessie is survived by her loving husband Paul Hume, having enjoyed 37 years of marriage and sister Juanita Haulter Tichenor. Jessie is also survived by her two children from her first marriage to the late Berny Lee Dobson: Karen Dobson Sample (Ed) of Allen, Texas and Mark Dobson, Sr. (Barbara) of Jeffersonville, Indiana. Jessie also leaves behind six grandchildren; Derrick Sample (Marcella), Mark Dobson, Jr. (Jamie), Julie Grannan (John), Jessica Coons (Ben), Yolanda Hartle, and Greg Hume, ten great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

She was truly one-of-a-kind. Jessie loved everyone generously, everywhere she went and had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jessie served as a Matron at the Clark County Jail for a number of years and had a significant and positive impact on prisoners and fellow employees alike through the love and hope that she shared with everyone, especially those in the midst of hardships and trouble.

She had a variety of other jobs over the years ranging from cafeteria manager at Rose Hill Elementary School to sales specialist at JCPenney, all the while brightening the lives of everyone she worked with. Jessie graduated from Jeffersonville High School, class of 1951 and attended Indiana University Southeast.

She will be most remembered for her love of children and her ministry of sharing the word of God as a much beloved Sunday School teacher.  She was a faithful member of Oak Park Baptist Church. Daily scripture reading and times of devotion were a part of Jessie’s daily life. She was always ready to bless others with her heartfelt prayers.

Jessie loved life and without a doubt made it count. She made sure to pass down her great cooking skills and countless other traditions to her loving family while making lots of memories along the way.

We will forever hold a place for her in our hearts, and won’t be complete until we see her again.
