Joe Metzger Obituary

Joe Arnold Metzger, age 93 of Jeffersonville, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by unwavering faith, deep love for family, and steadfast devotion to his country.  Born to the late Ida May (Yates) and George Metzger, Jr., Joe lived a life that truly reflected his guiding motto: “Faith, Family, & Country.” These were not just words to him—they were the foundation upon which he built a life of purpose, integrity, and service.

A proud patriot, Joe honorably served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. As a Second Class Communications Technician, he carried out his duties with diligence both in the United States and in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His commitment to his country was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, a symbol of his dedication and sacrifice.  Professionally, Joe devoted many years as an accountant, ultimately retiring from Devoe Paints as a respected Financial Analyst. His strong work ethic, keen mind, and trustworthy nature left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike.

At the heart of Joe’s life was his enduring faith. A devoted member of First Baptist Church & then First Christian Church of Jeffersonville, he lifted his voice in praise as a choir member for an incredible 62 years. His baritone voice filled the sanctuary, touching the hearts of all who heard him. Beyond the choir, Joe faithfully served as Sunday School Superintendent, church bus driver, and served on many committees—always willing to lend his time and talents to further the work of the church he loved so dearly.

Joe also found joy in community and fellowship. Through his involvement in the Optimist Club and the Greater Louisville Koi Club and Gold Fish Society, he built lasting friendships and shared his passions. Known for his skill and generosity, Joe designed and built beautiful koi ponds for friends, creating peaceful spaces that would be enjoyed for years to come.  In his quieter moments, Joe found peace in the simple blessings of life. Whether fishing, reading the newspaper, tending his garden or sharing flowers with loved ones, he embraced the beauty of the outdoors. He also had a fun-loving spirit—one that could be heard loud and clear as he joyfully played his favorite music as loudly as possible, especially “Free Bird,” for the whole neighborhood to enjoy.  Joe had a servant’s heart that never wavered. He was the kind of man who would stop without hesitation to help a stranger—jump-starting a battery, changing a tire, or offering a helping hand to anyone in need. His kindness was genuine, his generosity quiet but constant.  Above all, Joe was a family man. He treasured every moment spent with those he loved—family vacations, shared stories, laughter echoing through the home, and the joy of being surrounded by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To his family, Joe was their “Solid Ground” and a steady, loving presence whose strength and guidance will be deeply missed.

Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Betty Metzger, and his sister, Mary Carolyn Berry.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving daughters, Susan Lee Metzger and Lisa Jo Kedo (Alexander); his beloved son, Joel Metzger; his cherished grandchildren: Christopher Schaub (Christina), Rebecca Garcia (Daniel), Victoria Hutchins (Joshua), Miki Razo (Nicholas), and Benjamin Kedo (Leslie); and his treasured great-grandchildren, Malachi, Solomon, Niko, Penelope, Mori, Jamie, Lucy, and Brooklyn. He is also lovingly remembered by his dear friend and closest cousin, Jerry (and Peggy) Metzger.

A life so richly lived, so generously given, and so faithfully devoted will never be forgotten. Joe’s legacy of faith, love, service, and patriotism will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
