John Estes Obituary

John Curtis Estes, 83, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2022, in Jeffersonville, Indiana. He was born on July 22, 1938, to the late Minor and Alma Estes in Louisville, Kentucky.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Minor Estes and Alma Handy Estes.

Left to cherish his memory, John leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Gloria Chambers Estes; 2 daughters, Angela Smith (Mark), and Sheri Sellmer; 2 grandchildren, John Sellmer (Reece), and Courtney Yarbrough (Randy); 4 great grandchildren, Irylande Sellmer, Zach Sellmer, Cory McGinnis, and Ella Leddington; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and close friends.

John was known by all his closest friends and family as “Jack,” which means “God is gracious.” This could not be a more perfect name for John Estes. “Jack” is described by his wife Gloria as having “the patience of Job.” He spoke in a low, quiet voice and never had a negative word to say about anyone, or anything, except for deviled eggs. He loved his routine nightly 9:00PM ice cream hour with Gloria and was an expert in bluegrass gospel music.

In his earlier years Jack was an Eagle Scout, an exceptional member of his bowling league and a champion Yukor player. He was a dedicated member and Deacon of First Baptist Church in Jeffersonville for 57 years, where he sang weekly in the church choir and sang bass for the church quartet.

He loved camping, playing guitar, dancing and chocolate covered cherries. He was an avid video gamer and surprised many by how well he played the Playstation 4, even in his 80s; he was known to master a new game quickly and it was difficult to keep up with him.

“Jack” never knew a stranger; he would often ride around Meijer in a mechanical shopping cart and talk to the grocery store employees as if he had known them their entire lives; he quickly became a favorite there and even memorized a few of their names.

More than anything, “Jack” loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all his heart.

Though we his loved ones are grieving tremendously while adjusting to a new, more empty way of life without John Estes, he is celebrating in unity with his Savior and has gained everlasting life.

He is free of sorrow, pain and suffering and will never be held back by the frailty of his human body again; all his frustrations with his physical inabilities are gone and he is dancing once again.
