Jon Sowder Obituary

Jon Allen Sowder passed thru the veil of this world on February 24, 2024. He was born August 21, 1952 in Winfield, Kansas to Jack and Beverly (Bright) Sowder. Jon graduated from Winfield High School 1970 and Pittsburg State 1989. He and Janice Malone were married in 1972. Their children, Gabriel, Kimberly, and Anna, were born and lived in Winfield until their move to Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1989. Jon worked for Morton Buildings in Winfield; K-I Lumber, Louisville, KY; and Home Services his own carpentry business.

The light of Jon’s life was his family. He was always ready to help with projects, grill for a family gathering, or attend as many of Ezra’s games as possible and play with Dawson at every chance. Over the years he helped with Boy Scouts, 4-H and numerous other activities his children were involved in. Nothing put a smile on his face faster than seeing any and all family and their pets walk thru the door.

Jon was active in and dedicated to First Christian Church and Jeffersonville Evening Optimist Club. He looked forward to his walks with his Walking Buddies and breakfasts with his best friend, Joe Metzger. Golf season found him on the course year after year until his health prevented him. Jon made friends everywhere he went with his humor and curiosity about everything. He was a Kansas Jayhawks basketball fan thru and thru.

So very helpful and caring to Jon were his care team-Dr. Mark Head, Dr. Riley Snook, Dr. Scott Cornell, their staffs; the staff at Fresenius, and the caregivers from SouthernCare Hospice.

Since 2013 he lived life fully as he was able while coping with multiple diseases. The motto of his journey was “We laugh. We cry. We go take a nap.”

Jon is survived by wife Janice Malone Sowder, son Gabriel, Dana Andriot, and best grandson ever Ezra; daughter Kimberly Sowder-Pennington and Adam Pennington; daughter Anna Sowder and Adrian Neely and best grandson ever Dawson; brothers David, Tom, and Monty Sowder and their families; Cousins Sue Paesschen-Stults and Jaye Lynne (Hamilton) Cox; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Beverly Sowder; paternal grandparents John Curtis and Frankie Pharel (Willhite) Sowder; maternal grandparents Wilbur Carl and Edna (Jones) Bright; aunts Wilburma (Bright) Stults and Barbara (Bright) Hamilton; nephew Joel Sowder; cousin Foy Stults.
