Joyce Gibson Obituary

Joyce Ann Gibson, a fiercely compassionate soul and a tireless advocate for justice, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, at the age of 83. Born on September 18, 1941, in Clinton, Indiana, Joyce lived a life defined by conviction, creativity, and care.

A progressive woman ahead of her time, Joyce stood boldly for human rights and animal rights. She believed deeply in fairness, equity, and dignity for all. Never one to remain silent in the face of injustice, Joyce was the voice for those who could not speak for themselves—always championing the underdog and challenging the status quo with grace, intellect, and unwavering courage.

Joyce earned her degree in English with a minor in French from Indiana State University, a foundation that led her to a life of service and empathy. She began her career as a teacher, inspiring young minds, before moving to Los Angeles in the 1970s, where she devoted herself to social work for the mentally ill. Her work was not just a job—it was a calling born of her profound compassion and desire to heal a broken world.

Joyce also possessed a creative spirit. She loved the thrill of a good thrift store find or discovering forgotten treasures in antique shops. Her talent with a sewing machine was matched only by her ingenuity—she even built her own living room furniture, crafting a home as unique and vibrant as she was.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Rebecca Anderson (Frank) and Mara MacMillan (Steve), as well as her cherished grandson, Harrison Elstun, and several nieces and nephews who will carry her memory forward. She is preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Anna Morini, her husband Roy Gibson, and her siblings Katherine, Virginia, and Bud. Also waiting to greet her at the Rainbow Bridge are her beloved dogs: Annie, Gus, Ashley, Daisy, Lily, and Dexter—each one deeply loved and cared for.

Joyce Ann Gibson was a woman of resilience, integrity, and heart. Her legacy is one of kindness, courage, and boundless love. She leaves behind a world she made better simply by being in it.

A celebration of Joyce's remarkable life will be held at a later date. Those who knew her are invited to come together in her memory, to share stories, laughter, and love, just as she would have wanted.

Rest in power, Joyce. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
