Kenneth Wayne Atherton Obituary

Kenneth "Wayne" Atherton, 81, passed away peacefully and entered Eternal Life on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. Born in Ballard County, Kentucky, to the late Emily Estelle and Rev. R. Perkins Atherton, Wayne embraced the joys and challenges of being a preacher’s kid in western Kentucky, often delighting in the playful mischief that came with the territory. His spirit was kind, loving, and full of energy, bringing warmth and light to everyone who knew him.

Wayne was a man of immense talent and creativity, mastering the intricate art of stained glass and woodworking. His custom creations—marked by their beauty and precision—left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to witness his craftsmanship. From delicate stained glass windows to finely crafted woodwork, Wayne's artistic legacy will endure through the lives he touched with his gifts.

A proud alumnus of Western Kentucky University, Wayne earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees, furthering his love for learning and commitment to excellence. His faith played a central role in his life, and he was a dedicated member of Eastern Heights Baptist Church, where he found fellowship and community.

Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 58 years, Susan Green Atherton; children, Ken Atherton, Jr. (Sandi) and Kristen Case (Kevin); grandchildren, Carissa Atherton, Celia Atherton, Sadie Atherton, Kameron Case, and Katelyn Case; and sister, Myra Claus.

His family honors his wish for cremation, and a memorial visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, IN. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at the conclusion of receiving hours, 3:00 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

A burial of his remains at Maplelawn Cemetery, 1335 N 13th St, Paducah, KY 42001 Paducah, Kentucky, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 21, 2024.

The family kindly requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Eastern Heights Baptist Church Building Fund.
