Leona Layne Sayre, age 86, of Sellersburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
She was born on July 2, 1939, in Langley, Kentucky, to the late Claude Layne and Bertha Lee Stephens. Leona made a profession of faith in Christ early in life while attending church in Eastern Kentucky, a faith that remained dear to her throughout her life.
A devoted housewife, Leona found great joy in the simple and beautiful moments of life. She loved reading, solving crossword puzzles, bird watching, walking, and fishing. A loyal University of Kentucky fan, she never missed a chance to cheer on the Wildcats. She also had a gift for gardening, with a green thumb that brought beauty to every season.
Leona was preceded in death by her loving husband, Philip Sayre; daughter, Sherrie Singleton; brother, Mike Layne; sister, Claudine Crum; and her parents.
She is survived by her daughter, Marla Schlangen (Henry); sister, Kaye Hicks; sons-in-law, Paul Singleton and Henry Schlangen; grandchildren, Shaun Schlangen (Michaela), Jana Allen (Chris), Stephanie Jones (Logan), and Philip Singleton (Katy); and eight great-grandchildren who were the light of her life.
Visitation will be held at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, IN 47130, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on Thursday, July 31, from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:30 AM. Burial will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.
Leona will be remembered for her kindness, quiet strength, and deep love for her family and faith. Her memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
