Mary Bell Obituary

Mary Josephine Bell was born June 12, 1932 in Jeffersonville, IN to the late Hobert and Lettie
Hardin. Mary Jo was called from earthly labors and illness to a peaceful rest on November 22,
2025. She was a proud 1950 graduate of Taylor High School in Jeffersonville, IN and an avid
sports enthusiast. She was employed by the U.S. Census Bureau as a Cartographic Technician
(Mapping Operations) and was promoted to Section Chief. She earned numerous performance
awards including the highest award given by the Census Bureau, The Department of Commerce
Bronze Medal Award. She retired in 1988, after 30 years of service.


During her lifetime, Mary Jo was active in the community, a lifetime member of the NAACP, and
Taylor High Alumnae Association. She also received multiple NAACP recognitions. Most recently
in October of 2025, the Jeffersonville NAACP honored her with the Lifetime Achievement
Award, which made her very proud.


She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, James N. Bell, Jr., parents, Hobert
and Lettie Hardin, brothers John Hardin, Melvin Hardin, Arlester Hardin, and sisters Pauline
Johnson and Lovern Gales. She is survived by her children, June Rochelle (Shelly) Bell and
Patricia (Patty) Lindsey (Kevin), grandchildren David Berniard, Shauna Lindsey and Tracey
Lindsey and a host of nieces and nephews to include great and great great nieces and nephews.
Mary Jo was a woman of honesty, integrity, class, and style, known for her quick wit. She had a
deep love for her children and grandchildren and was a true example of what it means to be a
devoted family member, loyal friend, and dedicated church member.


Funeral Services will be held 1 PM on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at Gilt Edge Baptist Church (1713 D.L. Motley Jr. Way , Jeffersonville, IN 47130), officiated by Pastor Darrell K. Nathan.  Entombment will follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.


Visitation will be held from 11AM until service time at the church on Saturday.

Arrangements entrusted to Scott Funeral Home (2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville).
