Michael Harry Marshall was born in Jeffersonville Indiana on October the 29th 1945. He passed away at Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville KY the morning of July 1st 2024 at the age of 78 after a long battle with cancer.
He was the youngest of a blended family that consisted of 13 children. His father was a well driller and his mother worked in a diner. He was the last remaining member of his immediate family. He attended Middle Road Elementary School and then Jeffersonville High School, where he graduated in 1963. He then attended Indiana University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business in 1968. He worked in data management and processing and became an information specialist. He has worked at companies such as Sears, Web MD, and Anthem Blue Cross where he helped set up healthcare information systems. Most recently, in post- retirement years he delivered flowers for Minish and Potts Florist, and thoroughly enjoyed being around people.
He married his wife Carol in 1969 and had two children, Kristen and Scott. He was the proud “Pops” of 7 grandchildren: Rachel, Riley, Jacob and Jonathan Stakelin and Jenna Claire, Annie Grace and Cutler Marshall. They brought him great pride and joy. He loved playing dragons, hunting “meteorites,” watching the trains, getting ice cream, and going to their games and competitions. He was never happier than with his grandkids, even though he often threatened to “sell them to the gypsies.”
He also loved fishing with buddies and most years took a fishing trip to Canada among other places. He dearly loved the Kentucky Derby and had box seats for many years. His Derby glass collection dates back to the early 1960’s. He loved sports and going to professional games with Scott, and has saved the tickets from all those events. He enjoyed the occasional cigar and especially his coffee. He loved cats, vacations and Walt Disney World. He was a huge fan of Halloween and trick or treating, and loved fireworks on the 4th of July. He loved history, especially World War II, and was an avid reader. His interest in history led him to research the history of the Bible and he became a self-taught expert. He had entire bookshelf filled with Atlases, archeology and research related to the topic. He loved his Sunday school class and his church, and going out with fellow Covenant friends.
He was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and lost the use of his left arm. Though he dealt with quite a bit of pain and had to adjust to doing everything one-handed, he never complained. It did not slow him down and he remained positive and optimistic, going about his usual routine. Unfortunately for us all, in the fall of 2023 he began to have numerous complications and significant pain, and finally succumbed to his cancer early in the morning of July 1st 2024. Friends and family will remember him as fun, friendly, generous, and caring. His grandkids will miss his unending support and goofy playfulness.
He is survived by Carol Marshall, Kristen and Brian Stakelin and their 4 children, Scott and Laura Marshall and their 3 children, and his niece Carla Sanders with whom he grew up. He was ready to go at the end, and confident in his relationship with the Lord. He is thankfully in a much better place now and free from pain. He is probably already playing cards with those that went before him, waiting for the rest of us to catch him up. He will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Church in Lagrange KY at 1 pm on Saturday July 6th. All are welcome to the reception afterwards. In lieu of flowers consider donating to Covenant Church.
