Mildred Smith Obituary

Mildred Ruth Smith, 94, passed away in Clarksville, Indiana on October 18, 2021. There will be a visitation held on Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 10:00AM – 3:00PM with service to follow at 3:00PM at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Burial will take place in Walnut Ridge Cemetery, Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Mildred was born on October 3, 1927 to the late Elijah and Margaret Hockensmith in Frankfort, Kentucky. She was one of eight children who grew up on a farm in Bethlehem, Indiana. Mildred was a graduate of New Washington High School. She went on to marry the love of her life, Paul Smith, whom she married in 1948 and together had 2 children. Paul preceded her in death in 2008. She had the opportunity to travel post-graduation, visiting Corpus Christi, Texas and New Orleans as a telephone operator during World War II.

Mildred was an avid reader of the Bible, novels, court room mysteries, etc. a great cook, seamstress and an “expert yard-saler”. Mildred was a selfless woman, whose life purpose was to serve the Lord and her family. She was selfless, a kind soul, always gracious, thinking of others more than herself. She lived for her family. She cooked Sunday dinner every week for all of her family until her early 90’s but still made sure there was something to eat on Sunday, just in case anyone stopped by. Her greatest award and achievement was the “Greatest Nana Award”. Mildred was able to live independently until she had a stroke two and half weeks ago; she was very strong-willed.

Mildred leaves to cherish her memories, her children; Michael (Gelsena) Smith & Paula (Jimmy) McMahel, her grandchildren; Jennifer (Matt) Theobald, Corey (Annie) Smith, Nathan (Tiffany) Gibson, & Stuart (Allison) Gibson, her step-grandchildren; Joey (Trica) McMahel & Sean (Bailey) McMahel, and her great-grandchildren; Joseph “Joey”, Elijah “Eli”, & Olivia “Livy” Theobald; Izabela “Iza”, Serafina “Fina”, & Lucy Smith; Kira, Audra, & Tessa Gibson; Blayden & Adley McMahel; Ryleigh, Colton, & Tinley McMahel, as well as many other family members and anyone who had the pleasure of sharing this life with her.

In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project.
