Phalis “Felix” Lamar Backherms, 93, of Clarksville, IN, passed away on April 27, 2020 at home surrounded by his family.
A car processional visitation will be held from 12 to 2 PM on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville. A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held immediately following at St. Anthony Cemetery in Jeffersonville.
Phal was born on December 24, 1926 in Laconia, IN, to the late Gus “Dooch” and Nora Backherms. He was a United States Army Veteran and served his country in the Korean War. He was a retired Electrician and worked at International Harvester for 30 plus years. He also worked as a delivery driver at Charlie Wilson’s Dixie Appliance for 25 years.
He was past-president of the W-9 CB Club, call name “FELIX” for many years. He was heavily involved in stock car racing with WW&H Racing and his son-in-law, Bill, winning 4-time NASCAR Winston Racing Series Championships at Louisville Motor Speedway. He was also a member of Tri-State Motorsports with 8-time ARCA Menard’s Champions Frank and Bill Kimmel, and a 2-time Salem Speedway Champion with his grandson, Will Kimmel and Kimmel Racing.
He loved to spend his time traveling, fishing and camping with friends and family. Later in life, he spent his time playing cards on Friday and Saturday nights at the VFW in New Albany and the Korner Pub in Georgetown.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Martha Jean Backherms; siblings, Kenneth Backherms, Charley Backherms, Lois Shewmaker, Lucille Fleace, Jim Backherms, and Morris Backherms; and significant other, Vee Bledsoe.
He is survived by his children, Michael Backherms, and Pam Kimmel (Bill); grandchildren, Kristina Stubblefield (Josh), and Will Kimmel (Erica); great-grandchildren, William and Waylon; and longtime caring friend and neighbor, Carollee Moore.
