Raymond Shope Obituary

Raymond Vance Shope, age 72, of New Albany, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at Baptist Floyd Hospital.  Born to the late Clim and Anna Mable (Fields) Shope, Ray lived a life guided by curiosity, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for nostalgia. He began his working years at Ford and Raytheon, where his strong work ethic and mechanical mind were evident. In time, Ray followed his heart and created a career uniquely his own—restoring 1940s and newer jukeboxes and pinball machines, breathing new life into the sights and sounds of another era.

Ray had a true passion for “picking.” Whether roaming antique malls or exploring private collections, he delighted in the hunt for monster masks, 1940s pin-up art, vintage signs, and classic coin-operated treasures. Each find told a story, and Ray took great joy in preserving those stories for others to enjoy. His keen eye, patient hands, and infectious enthusiasm made him a friend to fellow collectors and a beloved figure in the vintage community.  He also loved to tell the story of the day he met ZZ TOP at the New Albany Wal-Mart on Grant Line Road.  Ray got his famous photo taken, and when he asked what such a famous person was doing here in New Albany, the gentleman laughed and replied, "You can find Anything at Wal-Mart!"

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brother, Allen Shope. His memory will be lovingly cherished by his nephews and niece, Brian, Kevin, and Heather, who will forever hold close the warmth of his presence and the sparkle of his spirit.  Ray is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Gregg Kiser Strange Shope, whose life was enriched by his creativity, kindness, and unwavering companionship.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Scott Funeral Home (2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville).

Ray’s life was a beautiful blend of heart, history, and imagination—one that will continue to play on, like a favorite song from a well-loved jukebox, in the memories of all who knew him.
