Robert Van Cleave Obituary

Robert L. Van Cleave, age 72 of Clarksville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, friendship, hard work, and unwavering love for his family and community.

Born in Wiesbaden, Germany to the late Billy Joseph and Frankie (Martin) Van Cleave, Bob lived a life grounded in kindness and service to others. He departed this world with a glad heart, comforted by the peace he had found with God and the life he had so fully lived.  Growing up in the military life with his father & brothers made Bob so proud to be an American!  He was ever Patriotic, could weep when hearing The National Anthem, and loved to watch “Old Glory” wave in the wind!

For more than 30 years, Bob dedicated himself to Prudential Heating & Air, where he built a respected career in commercial HVAC sales. He was the kind of man who could fix nearly anything, and he gladly shared those talents with friends, neighbors, and anyone in need. To many, he became the trusted “community handyman,” always willing to lend a hand with a smile and a story.  Retirement only opened the door to new joys. An avid golfer, Bob found a second family at Wooded View Golf Course, where he became affectionately known as the “Cart Guy.” Whether greeting guests with a quick joke, sharing stories with regulars, or enjoying countless rounds with his beloved “Golf Guys,” Bob brought warmth and friendship everywhere he went. Rain or shine, he cherished the camaraderie, laughter, and memories made on the course.

Above all else, Bob treasured his family. He shared 40 loving years of marriage with his devoted wife, Liz, whose love and companionship were the foundation of his life. He was a proud father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose gentle spirit and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Beth Smith-White, and his brothers, Greg and Jay Van Cleave.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Liz (Leach) Van Cleave of Clarksville; children: Amy Jo Van Cleave of Jeffersonville, Dustin Van Cleave (Lauren Smith) of New Albany, and Ira Smith of Clarksville; brother, Mitchell Van Cleave (Kelly) of Clarksville; son-in-law Dr. Kevin White; cherished grandchildren: Bodi, Milo, and Baz; and Patch, the family dog who saved his kisses mostly for Liz—but every now and then shared one with Bob, too.  Though his absence leaves an ache in many hearts, Robert’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched with his generosity, humor, and genuine kindness. He will be remembered for his easy smile, his servant’s heart, and the love he gave so freely to family, friends, and strangers alike.

Memorial services will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Scott Funeral Home (2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville).  Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
