It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ruben Cantu on December 24, 2025. He unexpectedly, but peacefully, departed from this world at his home in Jeffersonville IN.
Ruben Cantu, 68, was born in 1958 and raised in Sterling, IL.
Ruben proudly enlisted in the United States Navy in 1986, dedicating over 20 years of service to his country. Throughout his career, he advanced to the rank of Chief Petty Officer Boatswain Mate, a position he held with great pride. Ruben’s love for the sea was unmatched, and it was at sea on the open waters where he felt most at home. After retiring from military life, Ruben cherished spending time with his family, friends, and his beloved dog, Marshall, who was like a son to him.
Ruben was a father to his daughter Alexandria Cantu, whom he cherished. He was blessed with two stepsons, Beau Curry (Missie) and Danny Curry, Jr. (Stacy) from his first wife of 15 years, Shawn Cantu Parker. Ruben adored his grandkids (Aubrey, Alyvia, Aaliyah, Beau Jr., Cameron, and Dylan) and leaves behind other surviving relatives who will deeply miss him.
Ruben is survived by Evangelina (sister), Ermalinda (sister), and Noe (brother) of Rockford, SanJuanita (sister) of Amboy, Velma (sister), Alejandro (brother) of Sterling, and Imaro Marques (brother) of Arizona. He is preceded in death by Alejandro Cantu and Irma Marques (parents), Theresa Cantu (sister), and Shelly Cantu (sister-in-law).
As we reflect on Ruben’s life, we remember him as a man of boundless generosity, always willing to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. His loud, infectious laughter and warm, gentle spirit brought joy to everyone fortunate enough to know him. Ruben’s presence was a gift, one that left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.
