Thomas “Tommy” Ennis, 84, of Louisville, passed away on August 14, 2024. Born on June 11, 1940, in Louisville, he was the son of the late Dorothy Schall Ennis and Raymond Earl Ennis (Eleanor).
In addition to his parents, Tommy is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Joanna Rogers Ennis; his son, Mark Ennis; and his brothers, Raymond Ennis (Norma) and David Ennis.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Nall (Danny); his sons, Chris Ennis and James Ennis (Tiffany); six grandchildren, David Nall (Kristina), Thomas Nall (Gabrielle), Danielle Nall, Christopher Ennis (Michal), Alex Gaines, and Tori Gaines; and seven great-grandchildren, Damien Davis, Mason Nall, Benjamin Nall, Emma Nall, Owen Nall, Cassie Ennis, and Violet Ennis. Also left to cherish his memory are his sister, Bonnie Gillis; his step-sisters, Sr. M. Margaret O.P. “Barbara Miller”, Kathy Bertolone, and Mary Ellen Brandi; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.
Tommy was a devout Catholic and a devoted husband and father. He met the love of his life, Joanna, in 1962 and they married in 1963. Together, they raised four children. Tommy was a master of all trades—carpenter, electrician, and maintenance-man. He had a knack for building and fixing anything, except cars. He was also known for his beautiful singing voice and was often heard singing over the choir at church. He loved being the center of attention. If you had time to listen (or got caught), he would surely tell you how he was doing and what was currently going on in his life. His lively personality and heart of gold made him the life of any party.
Tommy and Joanna moved from Louisville to their “little cabin in the woods” in Henryville, IN in 1997. There, they hosted many parties and Sunday family get-togethers where nickel and dime poker was surely to be played. In 2021, Joanna passed away suddenly and Tommy moved back to Louisville to be closer to his family for care until December 2023, when his dementia worsened and he had to move to a nursing facility for 24/7 care.
Tommy worked in the foundry at International Harvester in Louisville until the early 1980s. He went on to own a ceramic tile business before returning to work at Navistar/International Harvester in Indianapolis, from which he retired in 2001.
Tommy will be forever missed for his “Tommy’ism’s,” his fun-loving nature, and his beautiful singing voice.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Hosparus and the staff at Glen Ridge and Park Terrace for their loving and excellent care during Tommy’s final days.
A funeral Mass will be Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 11:00 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 6105 S. 3rd. Street with a celebration of his life immediately following.
