He was born on June 23, 1921, in Princeton, Indiana to the late Curtis and Bertha Ferguson.  He was a 1939 graduate from Princeton High School in Princeton, Indiana.

During World War II, Verner proudly served his country as a heavy weapons company squad leader in the Army’s 35th Division.  He landed in France 18 days after D-Day.  Verner received four Campaign Ribbons, a Good Conduct Ribbon, the Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star.

Verner was a charter member of the VFW Post #1147 in Princeton, Indiana and a member of the American Legion Post #35 in Jeffersonville.  He volunteered at Clark Memorial Hospital for many years, and he was past president of the auxiliary and a coordinator of the Life Line program.  Verner received many awards for his service to the hospital and within the community.  One of his most treasured recognitions was receiving the Bell Award for his volunteer service. He also was awarded the Rotary Service Above Self Award, and was designated Admiral in the Jeffersonville Navy. Verner was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his “spare” time.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 78 years, Ruth Ferguson; sisters, Thelma Rodgers and Fern Peavler; son-in-law, Stephen Rozgony; and great granddaughter, Nora Rozgony.

Verner is survived by his two daughters, Brenda Rozgony and Pamela Gladish (Michael); grandchildren, Lisa Larson (John), Jason Rozgony (Brita), Travis Gladish, Kelly Murphy (Alex), great grandchildren, Emily, Jessica, Jennifer, Kristin, Jackson, Katelyn and Caroline.
