Walter Saunders Jr. Obituary

Walter Saunders Jr., also affectionately known as “Wink” “Bumpy” “Pop” or “Daddy to his children, “Papaw" to his grandchildren and beloved by many, passed away peacefully at his home in Jeffersonville, Indiana, on June 26, 2025.  He was 71 years old.

Born on May 15, 1954, in Jeffersonville, IN, Walter was the sixth of thirteen siblings born to the late Walter Saunders Sr. and Catherine Saunders. From an early age, Walter's charm, humor, and strong sense of family shone brightly, shaping the vibrant life he would go on to live. Walter graduated from Jeffersonville High School and proudly served in the U.S. Navy. After his military service, he dedicated four decades to his career at General Mills (Pillsbury), where his hard work and commitment were unmatched. Simultaneously, he devoted 40 years of service to the Admirals Club, holding numerous roles and forming lifelong friendships.

A true enthusiast of life, Walter was well-known in the community for his radiant smile, contagious laughter, and unforgettable dance moves. He was the life of the party and a natural storyteller who could light up any room. He was a passionate golfer, a lover of Western films, an excellent cook, San Francisco 49ers fan and above all, a diehard Louisville Cardinals fan—never missing a chance to travel with the team, especially on his treasured annual trips to New York, always clad in Cardinal red.

Walter’s faith was central to his life. He proudly lived out his love for God and his deep-rooted value for family. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, resilience, and unconditional love.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Sr. and Catherine Saunders; brothers Ernest Wells, Kenneth Davey, and Lawrence Saunders; and his beloved granddaughter Je’lisya Winburn.

He is survived by his loving siblings: Curtis Wells, Edward Heston, Vernon Heston, Claude Saunders, Vanessa Saunders, Valerie Saunders, Sheila Harris (Richard), Chris Chambers, and Angela Chambers. He leaves behind his children, who brought him immense pride: Vanita Whiteside, Christopher Smith, Tasha Moorman, La’Nisha Moorman, and Sha’Mara Boone (William) Kenya Whiteside, Antalene Whiteside. His memory will also be cherished by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, special friend Karen Oliver and his cherished Admiral Club mates. Walter’s presence will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
