Walter Wilbern Wilson, 85, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on February 20, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky surrounded by family, friends, and church members. He was born on July 19th, 1938, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Isaac Edward Wilson and Pauline (Anderson) Wilson.

Wilbern was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Janet Elaine (Wright) Wilson for over six decades. Together, they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. WIlbern is survived by his daughters Annessa Baker (Steve), Alicia Mitchell (Kent), and Andrea Mitchell (Robert).

He was a loving grandfather to John David Mitchell (Anthony), Matthew Mitchell (Savannah), Kyle Mitchell (Paulina), Grant Mitchell (Erika), Austin Cuffel, Avery Santos (Jose), Connor Mitchell (Alana), and Kasey Mitchell (Tait). Wilbern was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Braileigh Mitchell, Avalynn Mitchell, Kadyn Mitchell, Bryce Mitchell, Damien Santos, Nicole Santos, Adeline Santos, Aurora Santos, Jayden Mitchell, and soon to be Lylla Mitchell.

Wilbern was preceded in death by his daughter, Abigail Wilson, his brothers, Charles Wilson and David Wilson and his parents Isaac Edward Wilson and Pauline (Anderson) Wilson.

Wilbern dedicated 16 years of his life to missionary work in Haiti, spreading hope and compassion to those in need. He served his country honorably in the United States Army for three years, stationed in Germany.

After returning from the mission field, Wilbern embarked on a career with the Census Bureau, where he retired after many years of dedicated service. In his retirement, he found joy in volunteering alongside his wife at Norton Healthcare, touching the lives of countless individuals with his kindness and generosity.

Wilbern had a passion for cooking, telling jokes, and sharing his love for life with everyone he met. He had a penchant for dressing up in fancy clothes and had a heartwarming tradition of giving out candy to those around him. Wilbern never met a stranger and had a gift for striking up conversations with anyone he encountered.

He was a proud alumnus of the University of Miami and an avid Miami Hurricanes Football fan, inspiring his grandsons to follow in his footsteps. Walter found solace and joy in Gospel quartet music, which lifted his spirits and filled his heart with praise.

Above all, Wilbern was a devoted husband who adored his wife Elaine. He married her on his 25th birthday, and their love endured throughout the years, serving as a beacon of strength and devotion to all who knew them. Wilbern was a faithful member of Christ Gospel Church for over 60 years, where his faith and love for his community shone brightly.

Walter Wilbern Wilson's legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering faith will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. May his soul find eternal peace in the loving embrace of his Creator.

Visitation will be held 2-8 p.m. Monday, February 26, 2024, at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, and again 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Christ Gospel Church, 2614 E 10th Street. Funeral services to honor his life will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the church, with burial to follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
