William "Russ" Fischer, age 98, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, devotion, and quiet strength that touched the lives of all who knew him.
Born in Jeffersonville to the late William and Clara Mae Fischer, Russ lived a life marked by deep commitment, first to his country, then to his family. He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps, Eighth Air Force, during World War II, working with B-29 bombers as a Corporal in the 43rd Bombardment Group. His eyes would still light up when he spoke of those years, especially his recent Honor Flight in September of 2024, a treasured moment of remembrance and gratitude for a life lived with courage.
After returning from the war, fate had another adventure in store: a blind date at a Dallas bus stop more than 76 years ago. An unforgettable encounter would lead to a love story for the ages. His beloved wife, Coleen (Quirl) Fischer, became his lifelong partner and best friend. Together they built a home grounded in love, mutual respect, and faith. Through every high and low, they stood hand in hand, raising a family, sharing laughter, and building a life that mattered.
Russ was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his cherished wife, Coleen; his children, Randy Fischer (Sherry), Debbie Ryan (Mike), and Nancy White (Jerry); his grandchildren, Greta Favara (Anthony), Lorna King (Kris), Robby Fischer, Stephanie Davis (Marcello), Phillip Davis (Rachel), Ashley Salyers (Joshua), and Jeremy White (Kaitlin); and seven beloved great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy and pride.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 28, 2025, at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway. Visitation will also be held from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at First Christian Church of Jeffersonville, 3209 Middle Road, with burial to follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Russ Fischer will be remembered not only for serving his country as a WW II Veteran, but as a man of strong convictions and deep love. He lived a long and beautiful life enjoying time spent with friends and family - and in doing so, gave the rest of us a blueprint for how to live with grace, dignity and unwavering devotion.
